Tropical Paradise Islands…

Many beautiful islands dot the coastline around Nias. Along the coast of North Nias there are 16 islands. A number of these islands were created by uplifting during the 2005 earthquake. Many existing island also increased in size and shape during this event. The effect can clearly be seen when visiting an island and seeing all the exposed coral reefs that were previously submerged. Four of the larger islands display all the qualities of a tropical paradise island; sandy beaches, swaying palm trees with clear blue water. A trip to these islands can easily be arranged by chartering a local boat at nearby harbour.

Panjang Island

Description: Panjang is the largest island on the northern coast of North Nias. It is a long and narrow island, hence the Indonesian name; Panjang (long) Island. The most interesting part of the island is the eastern corner where the best beach is located. The beach is narrow but very beautiful with good, safe swimming in front of it. Wunga Island

Description: Wunga Island is a palm-fringed tropical paradise island off the coast of Afulu sub-district. What is special about Wunga is the large protected lagoon in the middle of the Island. The turquoise coloured water of the lagoon is a great place to swim and snorkel. The north side of the lagoon has one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere on Nias. Makora Island

Description: Makora Island is a small beautiful island on the north-coast of Nias Utara. The island is only 500 meters long and 350 meters wide. It is covered in coconut palms and there is a small beach on the south-east side of the island. The beach is 150 meters long and quite narrow. The width of the beach varies depending on the tide. Description: La’fau Island is a beautiful island near La’fau village on the north-coast of Nias Utara. The oval shaped island is 1 kilometer long and 600 meters wide.
