In October 2013 North Nias Tourism launched a Facebook site. The idea was to spread the good word about North Nias on the web, as very little tourism information was available at the time. Slowly the page gathered ‘likes’ and received many positive comments and encouragement from people all over the world. Our first goal was to simply share information about all the things visitors can see and do here. The next step was to try make people take the step from interacting with us on social media to actually getting on a plane and coming over here. Finally in May 2014 it happened! The tourism office was contacted via the Facebook page by surf travel adventurer Petter Hoissen from Norway. After many e-mails back and forth, exchanging ideas and information Petter took the plunge and traveled to Nias. First stop was Afulu on the North Nias west-coast, a place well known in Indonesian surfing circles. In Afulu Petter stayed with a local family that often helps visiting surfers. After a few days in Afulu, Petter met up with friends from Norway and continued to Asu Island off the coast of West Nias Regency.
We hope Petter was the first of many adventurous travelers who dare to venture beyond the beaten path and try something new. Thanks Petter for making the effort to visit North Nias. The money you spent here is a valuable source of income for the local community!
