Tourism investment and development
After a quick image search on the web we can establish that North Nias is a very beautiful place with all the ingredients necessary for a tropical tourist destination; unspoiled beaches, wild nature and a unique culture to mention a few. We also know that Nias today is relatively well connected to major Southeast Asian travel hubs. Both the local government and community wants to be part of the tourism economy. So what is stopping North Nias from developing a thriving tourism industry?
Investment and Capacity!
Investment; the average income on Nias is significantly below the national average. There are very few people with any money to spare, much less to invest in tourism projects. The few people on Nias who do have the means to invest have very little experience of tourism. One of the main obstacles for tourism development is the lack of accommodation. There are miles of beautiful beaches here, but very few places to stay, because local people don’t have the means or skills to build hotels or guesthouses.
Capacity; since there are so few tourists here, the capacity to offer tourism services are low. Only a handful of people have any experience in operating a guesthouse, a restaurant or a tour company. These skills have to be learned from somewhere, and at the moment Nias needs outside help to acquire these skills.
Outside tourism investment bring funds and capacity to Nias. By working for new tourism businesses Nias people will learn the skills necessary to work in the tourism industry. Step by step local people will start to take a more prominent role in tourism development, eventually owning and operating their own businesses.
North Nias is now actively looking for partners in developing sustainable tourism. At the moment there is a shortage of tourism accommodation. We are particularly interested in tourism professionals with previous experience of operating successful businesses in a similar context who brings with them a network of contacts from the wider tourism industry.
Why invest in North Nias?
Tourism in Indonesia is steadily increasing and new destinations are being established all the time. Bali, Indonesia’s flagship tourism destination is now one of the most well known tourism icons in the world. With Bali as the epicenter, tourism has spread to neighboring islands and regions such as Lombok, Gili Islands and Komodo. Regions further afield are increasing in popularity; award winning resorts and lodges are now operating in Papua, Sulawesi and Kalimantan. Diving, surfing and ecotourism are increasing in popularity all over the country. So where is the next exciting new tourism destination in Indonesia? The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism predicts that Nias Island is in line to become one of Southeast Asia’s future tourism hot spots. Senior tourism officials have repeatedly stated their belief in the potential of Nias and have initiated several tourism capacity building projects for local governments on Nias.
If you want to be part of this process from the very beginning, we welcome you to visit us and see for yourself. This is some of what North Nias has to offer investors:
|Beautiful tropical island scenery||Close to major Asian travel hubs|
|70 km of undeveloped beaches||New international airport in Medan is gateway to Nias|
|A socially stable and safe destination||Market as ‘new’ exciting destination|
|Friendly and welcoming locals||Lots of available land for tourism development|
|For an island, relatively well connected||Investor friendly local government|
Of course there are challenges as well, but they are no different than the challenges faced by anyone starting a business on an Indonesian island. Nias today is considerably more developed than Bali, Phuket or the Maldives was when tourism development started there.
