Getting to North Nias
Getting to North Nias nowadays is surprisingly easy from anywhere in Southeast Asia. It involves two short flights and a 1-2 hour drive. To give you an idea; if you leave Singapore in the morning, you can be on the beach in North Nias on the afternoon of the same day.
The Gateway to Nias Island is Medan, the capital of North Sumatra and Indonesia’s fourth largest city. Its newly constructed international airport connects directly with many Southeast Asian capital cities and there are 5-6 flights per day from Medan to Nias Island.
Most people fly to Nias, but it is also possible to come here by boat. This option is mainly used by visitors bringing their own vehicle or adventurous backpackers travelling local style. The boats leave from the west coast of Sumatra several times a week.
Once you arrive on Nias, you can arrange transport from the airport to North Nias Regency. Depending on where you are going to, the drive to the north part of the island will take you 1 to 2.5 hours.
